CKHA $551 Million Dollar Proposal to Rebuild Hospitals

CKHA  Proposal to Rebuild both Sites

Jim Laforet Chairman of the Image Project Steering Committee said the long range plans to build new hospital facilties at both the CKHA in Chatham and the SDH in Wallaceburg began in truth more than 10 years ago. When the 2 hospitals, Public General Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital merged, the committee knew that even with improvements and the partial building of a new structures this day would come when a new facility would have to be undertaken. The present site of CKHA on Emma St. has some newer facilities but still encompasses a large portion of the old PGH structure.

The $551 Million Dollar proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care for final approval. The proposal calls for a new 6 storey building to replace the PGH site and a one storey with a full emergency room at the SDH site. The Chatham facility plans to keep the same number of medicine beds but there will be none in Wallaceburg.

Sarah Padfield CKHA Vice President and Chief Financial Officer said there is more emphasis on providing critical care and surgical beds and less emphasis on general beds since hospital care is the most expensive care in our sytem.

If the proposal is accepted the local share of the cost would be 10% plus providing additional funds for new capital equipment that may be required. Chatham-Kent has always risen to the task at hand and if this proposal goes ahead I am sure that this will be the case again. Charitable work is about making the community better and Chatham-Kent is a community that cares about their community. I will keep you posted.
