Completely Renovated Capital Theatre
The Chatham Capital Theatre is a 1214 seat entertainment venue in the heart of Historic Downtown Chatham. The theatre first opened as a movie house in 1930 and, over the past decade, has undergone an intensive restoration to become a first-rated entertainment venue.
The theatre is now open and ready to entertain you. The theatre's inaugural season, began with the week-long opening celebration on September 17,2010 The Capital will be host to an astounding line up of illustrious talent - theatre, ballet, musical and will take the stage. There is something for everyone even a Children's Series.
The Official Ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Friday Sept 17 at 10 A.M. Mayor Randy Hope was in attendance as well as MP Dave Vanketeren and MPP Pat Hoy. King St. was closed to traffic and Chatham and area residents turned out in large numbers. Public tours of the spectacular facility followed.
The opening continued at 7 P.M. with the Mayor's 3rd Annual Gala for the Arts and Culture. The Black Tie affair featured dining and dancing on the Theatre stage to the big band sound of the 17 pc. Sophisticated Swings. The music was chosen to follow the decades that the Capital theatre has been open starting with the 30`s to the 90`s. The evening was a huge success and additional seating was added to accomodate the long waiting list.
Saturday and Sunday evenings of Opening Week were another huge success when Josh Turner Double Platinum Country Western Star delivering a spell binding performance to those fortunate enought to get a ticket.
Bill Cosby took the stage to a sold out audience for 2 performances on Sept 22 2010. He sent word that he enjoyed performing in Chatham and had great things to say about the new facility.
As part of the formal opening of the Chatham Capital Theatre, the association has announced the publication of a bound, hardcover coffee table book. It will be entitiled " Palace Of Pastime" and covers the transformation of the facility from it's glamorous beginnings in the 1930's to it's less than desirable appearance in the 1990's to it's glorious re-opening in 2010. This will be depicted in pictures and words.
The Theatre plans to show case all kinds of Entertainment from Country western to Ballet and everything in between.
Liona Boyd Virtuoso performer and composer will appear on Tuesday Nov 9 /2010. She bridges the gap between classical and pop and has collaborated with many renowned performers. She has personally composed many original pieces in a wide range of styles from Renaissance to Baroque, classical, romantic to contemporary, pop and Nuevo latina. She is a typical example of the diverse talent that will grace the stage of this wonderful new venue.
The Vienna Boys Choir will perfrom on Nov 19/2010 at 7:30
The Toronto based Ballet Jorgen Canada is presenting their production of The Nutcracker at the Capital Theatre on December 11 at 7:30 P.M. and on Sunday December 12 at 2:30 P.M.
