Active Lifestyle Centre in Chatham-Kent
Seniors looking for something to do have no further to look than the Active Lifestyle Centre on Merritt Ave. in Chatham. The Centre opened in 1990 and underwent an expansion in 2007. Executive Director Sue Williams said that the board is looking to develop a 3-5 year plan to be able to handle further expansion. At present the centre is stretching the limits as far as capacity and with the Baby Boomers about to retire in the next 10-15 years there will certainly be a need for more development..The centre has something for everyone from an up-to-date Woodworking Shop for the person who enjoys working with his hands, to bridge,quilting scrapbooking or painting lessons.
The Woodworking Shop has 24 member signed up, 5 of them are women. Projects can be as simple as a Birdhouse to more complex items such as Chairs and Table. If your are not an experienced woodworker but have an interest, this is a way to learn. Everyone helps each other. and they all work well together. It is a friendly atmoshere and not one a lot of people are aware exists. The member often offer some of their items for sale at the annual Christmas Bazaar.
Just because you have reached those Golden Years is no reason to give up your fun. Join in on one of the many trips planned by the centre. One of the favorites is a bus trip to Caesar’s Casino in Windsor for the day for a very reasonable price. Enjoy a little gambling, have a wonderful dinner and leave the driving to the bus driver. Special events are also planned for some weekends such as a casino night with a roast beef dinner. All are welcome even non-member. The centre's membership rooster numbers close to 1000 and an average of 180 participants attend one or more activities at the centre daily. Open between the hours of 9 A.M. and 4 P.M. the centre also has additional evening programs to attract the younger seniors who may still be working. Membership is very reasonable and is $35.00 per year with a $2.00 user fee per visit.The centre can also be rented out on weekends for special occasions if there are no conflicts.
The Active Lifestyle Property is owned by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent but most of the operating funds are provided by the province.
